On Exuding Light
/The quality of the light you work in can make a difference in what you produce. My art studio is in the basement of an old house, so there’s not much natural light there. I’m okay with that because I have it well equipped with several daylight lamps. However, that being said, I couldn’t work there full time. I have to soak up light in other ways. When I write, it’s sometimes snuggled up with 80-pound Koda dog on “his” couch, or at the kitchen table because that’s where the best light is.
Lucky for me I have additional options at home. For instance my backyard, though tiny, has morning sun and afternoon shade. There’s a table and chairs, a little fountain, and just enough sounds of life from the neighborhood to make me feel connected without feeling distracted. It’s important for me to seek out that light so that I can also exude light.
And by light, I don’t just mean the physical, but also the spiritual and metaphorical light. Some people have a lot of it and are willing to share. Even some places have it. Places where we can shamelessly, greedily, gratefully absorb goodness. I encourage you to seek those people and places out.
It might sound selfish, but it’s really not. Because as you immerse yourself in positive environments with positive people, you absorb some of that quality, and then you can share it with others.
